Does Answer Short Question count for Speaking or Listening in PTE?

In the July 2025 official Score Guide, Answer Short Question contributes to Listening only — not Speaking — even though you answer it out loud in the Speaking and Writing part of the test. It is marked correct/incorrect on a single trait, Vocabulary: 1 for an appropriate word, 0 for an inappropriate one. There is no Pronunciation or Oral Fluency trait attached to it.

Why a one-word answer is enough

Because the only trait is word choice, "a stethoscope" scores exactly the same as "I think the instrument you are describing is a stethoscope." The extra words earn nothing and give you more room to get something wrong.

Say the noun. Say it clearly enough to be transcribed, then stop. Padding an ASQ answer with a full sentence is a habit imported from IELTS speaking and it does not transfer.

If your Speaking score is stuck, this is the wrong lever

A lot of prep material still says ASQ "adds to both your Speaking and your Listening score." That does not match the current official table. If you have been drilling ASQ to lift a stalled Speaking band, you are practising a task that does not feed it.

Speaking is driven by the items with Oral Fluency and Pronunciation traits — Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Respond to a Situation and Summarize Group Discussion. That is where the time goes.

If Listening is stuck, ASQ is cheap points

ASQ items are short, there are several of them, and they test general knowledge and everyday vocabulary rather than anything test-specific. That makes them one of the quickest question types to improve, though with only 5-6 of them in a test they are a small slice of your Listening score.

There is also no penalty for a wrong answer. Never stay silent — a guess costs you nothing and a blank scores the same zero. If you genuinely have no idea, say the most plausible single word that comes to mind and move on.

How to practise it in ten minutes a day

Volume matters more than depth here. Run through a large set of ASQ prompts quickly, mark yourself right or wrong, and keep a list only of the ones you missed — those are usually vocabulary gaps in a specific domain (weather, anatomy, university roles, geography).
