I wrote 320 words in the PTE essay — will I get zero?

No. A 320-word essay does not score zero. In the published Form scoring for Write Essay, 200–300 words earns full marks, 120–199 or 301–380 words earns partial marks, and zero is given below 120 or above 380 words. At 320 you drop one point on Form and every other trait you were marked on still counts.

The word count bands, exactly

Form is the trait that looks purely at length. The published bands are: 200–300 words = 2 points, 120–199 or 301–380 words = 1 point, under 120 or over 380 words = 0 points. Form also gives 0 if the essay is written in capital letters, contains no punctuation, or only consists of bullet points or very short sentences. Beyond that — Form does not care what you wrote, only how much.

Everything else about your essay is judged by separate traits: content, development and coherence, grammar, linguistic range, vocabulary and spelling. Being at 320 words has no direct effect on any of those.

Why a zero on Form is the outcome that actually hurts

The reason the "you'll get zero" rumour exists is that Form and Content are gatekeeper traits. Per Pearson's scoring guidance, if Form or Content scores zero, the remaining traits are not credited — a 400-word essay and a 90-word essay really can come back at zero regardless of quality.

That gate sits at 380 words, not 300. You were 60 words clear of it.

What 320 words costs you in practice

One point on one trait of one item. Your Writing score is aggregated across the essay and the other writing-scored tasks, including Summarize Written Text and Write from Dictation, so a single Form point is a small dent, not a section-wide loss.

If your essay was well argued and clean, the writing score you get back will mostly reflect that. Going slightly over is not fatal: essays of 310–330 words still lose only that single Form point.

How to stay inside the band next time

Don't count words on test day — the essay screen already shows a live word count at the bottom, so there is no need to count by hand. Instead, learn your own shape offline: write five timed essays, count them, and learn what 250 words looks like as a shape on the page. For most people it is a 40-word introduction, two body paragraphs of 80–90, and a 35-word conclusion.
