What happens if your Summarize Written Text is 76 words

You lose the whole question, not one point. Form scores 0 if the response is under 5 or over 75 words, isn't one single sentence, or is typed in capitals — and the official Score Guide states that when a response scores zero for Content or Form, no score points are given for that response at all. So 76 words takes Content, Grammar and Vocabulary down with it.

The rule, exactly as written

Form is a single point. You earn it if your summary is between 5 and 75 words, is one complete sentence, and isn't written in all capital letters. Miss any of those and Form is 0. There is no sliding scale and no rounding in your favour — 76 sits outside the range in the same way 200 does.

Why one extra word costs four traits

The part most prep pages skip is the zero-score rule. Because a Form 0 triggers it, the Content, Grammar and Vocabulary points you would have earned are not awarded either. A summary that captured the main idea perfectly and read cleanly still returns nothing if it runs one word long.

It shows up in two skill scores

Summarize Written Text is an integrated task — it feeds both Reading and Writing. A zeroed item therefore dents two numbers on your report, not one. If you've ever seen a score report where Reading and Writing both came in oddly low with no obvious weakness elsewhere, an over-length or accidentally two-sentence summary is worth ruling out.

What to do in the exam

Aim for 55–70 words. That's comfortably inside the range, long enough to carry the main idea plus two supporting points, and short enough that a nervous last-second addition doesn't tip you over. The response box shows a running word count — make checking it, and confirming you have exactly one full stop, the last thing you do before moving on.

Structure is the other half of Form. The safest shape is one complex sentence joined with commas, semicolons used sparingly, and no second full stop anywhere — not even after an abbreviation you were about to type out of habit.
