My PTE recording stopped before I finished speaking

This is almost always the three-second silence rule, not a fault. The recorder closes after roughly three seconds of silence, the status changes to Completed, and there is no way to reopen it. If you paused to think — mid-sentence, or after your opening line — that pause is what ended the recording. It is normal behaviour, and it happens to a lot of people on their first attempt.

What actually got scored

Only what was captured before the cutoff. A Describe Image answer that stopped after your first sentence is marked as that first sentence — the rest does not exist as far as the scorer is concerned.

That hits content hardest, and it can drag fluency too, because a response that ends abruptly mid-thought is not a fluent response. It only affects that one item, though. One truncated answer does not sink a Speaking score.

Why a technical review will not help

A technical review checks your audio recordings for technical issues that may have affected your speaking score. The silence timer working exactly as designed is not a fault, so the review will confirm your audio recorded correctly and you will lose the fee.

If the microphone genuinely failed — no audio captured at all, or the administrator had to intervene — that is a different case and worth pursuing through the official Pearson process.

The fix is behavioural, not technical

Start within a second or two of the tone. Long pauses at the start are the most common way people lose an item, because the recorder can close before you have said anything at all.

Bridge your thinking gaps with sound rather than silence. A short connector — "and this suggests that", "another point here is" — buys you a second without triggering the timer. It is slightly less elegant than a clean pause, but a slightly padded answer scores and a cut-off answer does not.

How to build the habit

You cannot train this by reading about it. You have to record yourself under the same cutoff until three seconds of silence feels physically wrong.
