I said nothing in PTE Describe Image — does it ruin my whole Speaking score?

No. A blank response scores zero for that one item and nothing beyond it. It does not zero your Speaking section, and it has no effect at all on Reading, Writing or Listening. Speaking is aggregated across many scored items, so people do still hit their target after freezing on one image.

Why silence scores zero on that item

Describe Image and Retell Lecture are marked on content first, then oral fluency and pronunciation. With no content there is nothing to assess, so the fluency and pronunciation of that response earn nothing either — it is a zero for the item rather than a partial.

This is also why saying something imperfect always beats saying nothing. Even a wrong-ish sentence about the axis labels puts content on the table.

What it does not touch

One blank item does not void your test, does not flag your result, and does not carry into other sections' item-level scores. Your Reading and Writing scores are built from completely separate tasks.

Two things are worth knowing. The separate Enabling Skills section was removed from the Score Report in November 2021 and replaced by a Skills Profile only you can see. Retell Lecture also feeds your Listening score. Describe Image does not touch Listening, so if the image was where you froze, the reach is narrower.

Wait before you rebook

Wait for the score. You genuinely cannot predict a section result from one item, and candidates routinely misjudge which parts of their test went badly — the item you remember is the one that went wrong, not the twenty that went fine.

Results are usually available within two days, though Pearson says they can take up to five working days. Check Pearson's guidance if yours is slow. Rebooking before you see the number is how people end up paying twice for a score they already had.

The fix for next time is a script, not more vocabulary

Freezing on Describe Image is almost never a language problem — it is the ten seconds of blank panic while you decide what to say. The cure is a fixed opening you can start on autopilot: name what the visual is, then read the highest and lowest value or the most obvious feature aloud, then one comparison. Start talking before you have a full plan and let the plan catch up.

Drill the same three-move template on twenty different images and the freeze stops happening, because you are no longer choosing under pressure.
