I started speaking before the beep in PTE Read Aloud

Anything you said before the microphone opened was not captured, so those words are simply missing from your response. In Read Aloud that costs you on content, because content is scored on how much of the printed text you actually reproduced. It affects that single item — one lost opening line will not sink your Speaking score.

How much you actually lost

If you jumped in a fraction early and only clipped the first word or two, the damage is small: a short content deduction on one item out of many.

If you read a whole opening clause into a closed microphone, more content is missing, and there is a second cost — people who realise mid-sentence usually stop, hesitate, and restart. That hesitation is inside the recording, so it can pull fluency down as well as content.

Why it feels worse than it is

Speaking is assembled from a lot of items across Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Respond to a Situation and Summarize Group Discussion. Traits like Oral Fluency and Pronunciation are judged across all of them, so one flawed item counts for little.

The candidates who lose real marks to this are the ones who do it repeatedly because of a habit, not the ones who did it once under pressure.

Watch the status box, not the clock

The reliable cue is the recording status indicator on screen, not counting seconds in your head and not the tone you think you heard. Begin only once it shows that recording has started.

In Read Aloud you get preparation time with the text on screen. Use it to read the sentence silently and mark where you will breathe — then keep your eyes on the status box, not the text, in the last second before you start.

If it happens again mid-test

Do not stop and apologise, and do not restart from the beginning of the sentence — restarting doubles the fluency damage and eats your recording window.

Pick up from where you are, keep an even pace, and finish the item. The scorer has no way to reward you for regret, and the next item is worth more than the one you just lost.
