Can I retake only the speaking section of PTE?

No. PTE Academic has no single-skill retake option. If you need a higher score in one skill, you have to book and sit the complete test again — all sections, full fee. You may have seen pages suggesting otherwise; they are describing the IELTS One Skill Retake, which is a different exam from a different provider. Pearson has no equivalent for PTE Academic, and any site claiming there is one is wrong.

Where the confusion comes from

IELTS introduced a One Skill Retake that lets candidates resit a single component. Several coaching blogs then published "PTE One Skill Retake" articles that simply swapped the exam name, and those pages still rank.

If you find a page telling you that you can resit only PTE speaking, check whether it links to anything on Pearson's own site. It won't, because there is nothing to link to.

Why a single-skill resit doesn't really fit PTE

PTE is integrated by design. Many items are scored against more than one skill: a spoken response can feed your listening score, and a written response to audio feeds both listening and writing. Retell Lecture, Summarize Spoken Text and Write from Dictation all straddle skills.

That means a low speaking score is often not purely a speaking problem — and isolating one section for a resit would not measure the same thing the full test measures. It is part of why the format requires a complete sitting.

What to do instead

Treat it as a targeted preparation problem rather than a booking problem. Find which items inside the weak skill are actually costing you: for speaking, that is usually Read Aloud and Repeat Sentence, and the sub-scores that move are oral fluency and pronunciation rather than content.

Before you book the full test again

Remember you cannot book a new PTE until your previous score has been released, and your existing score report stays valid for two years regardless of what a retake produces. There is no risk of losing the sections you already scored well in.

Also check the actual requirement you are chasing. Some universities and immigration streams look at the overall score alone, and others combine a minimum overall score with a minimum on one or more of the four communicative skills. It is worth confirming exactly which number you need before you pay for another full sitting.
