My PTE Overall Score Is Lower Than All Four Section Scores

This is normal and it is not a marking error. Pearson states explicitly in the Test Taker Score Guide that the overall score is not an average of your Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing scores. It is calculated from your performance across the entire test, item by item, so it can legitimately land below — or above — all four communicative skill scores.

Why the arithmetic does not work

The four skill scores and the overall score are produced from the same test but not by the same method. Each skill score aggregates the items that contribute to that skill; the overall score is computed from your performance across every item in the test. They are two different views of the same performance, not a subtotal and a total.

Because most items feed more than one skill, an item you did badly on can be diluted inside two skill scores while still pulling on the overall calculation. That is enough to produce the pattern you are looking at.

The calculators online are reconstructions

The formulas circulating on forums and score-calculator sites — averaging the four skills, sometimes with a fifth 'enabling skills' value bolted on — are third-party reconstructions, not Pearson's published method. Pearson has never released the weighting.

Do not use them to predict a retake. If a calculator tells you that fixing Speaking by five points lifts your overall by three, that number is a guess dressed up as arithmetic.

Is it worth requesting a review?

Not on the basis of the arithmetic alone — the pattern is expected behaviour, not a marking error. A rescore is also not a free second opinion: under Pearson's policy a human expert rescores your entire test for a fee, the new score replaces your old one permanently, and it can go down as well as up. Check the current fee and the deadline on Pearson's rescore policy page before you consider it.

If something genuinely went wrong on test day — a microphone fault, a machine that cut you off, a room disruption — that is a different matter and worth raising with Pearson customer support directly.

What actually moves the overall number

Because the overall is computed across every item, broad accuracy moves it more reliably than hammering one section. Two or three shaky item types spread across the test will hold it down even when your headline skill scores look fine.

Look for the tasks you consistently half-finish or guess on, and the integrated items — Repeat Sentence, Retell Lecture, Summarize Group Discussion, Summarize Written Text, Summarize Spoken Text, Write from Dictation, Highlight Incorrect Words, Highlight Correct Summary — that each feed two communicative skills at once. Those are the ones doing the most work in both directions.
