PTE Writing Stuck at 65 but My Grammar Is Good

If your grammar is genuinely solid and Writing will not move past 65, the cap is almost always Form and Content rules rather than language. Summarize Written Text must be one single sentence of 5 to 75 words — break that and the response is not scored. An essay well below the required length scores 0 for Form, which zeroes the entire item no matter how well argued it is.

Form is checked before quality

Form is not the same gate everywhere. For Summarize Written Text it is pass/fail: one single, complete sentence of 5 to 75 words, not written in capital letters — fail that and nothing else about the response is assessed. For the essay it is a three-point scale: 200 to 300 words scores full Form marks, 120 to 199 or 301 to 380 words scores half, and under 120 or over 380 words zeroes the item — as does an essay written in capital letters, with no punctuation, or made only of bullet points or very short sentences. Your grammar, your vocabulary, your argument — none of it is reached.

This is why the plateau feels so unresponsive. You improve the writing, but the writing was never the problem, so the score does not move. There are only two Summarize Written Text items and one essay in the whole test, so a single Form failure takes out a large slice of what your Writing score is built from.

A zeroed item costs you twice

Summarize Written Text is an integrated task: it feeds Reading as well as Writing. When it zeroes on Form, it stops contributing to both. One formatting slip flattens more than one number on your report.

If you have a Writing score and a Reading score that both came in lower than you expected, an unscored SWT is a very plausible common cause.

Templates are now read by humans

Since the August 2025 update, Summarize Written Text and Write Essay are part-scored by human markers alongside the AI. A heavily templated essay — the same three linking phrases, the same skeleton, thin topic-specific content — is a bigger risk than it used to be, because Content is judged on whether you actually engaged with this prompt.

Keep a light structure if it helps you write under time pressure, but the body of the essay has to be about the specific question. Generic paragraphs that would fit any prompt are exactly what Content scoring is designed to catch.

The check to run before you submit

For SWT: count the full stops. There must be exactly one, at the end. Then check you are inside 5 to 75 words. For the essay: check you are inside the stated range before you spend any time editing sentences.
