I've got the same PTE score three times in a row. Why is it not improving?

A flat score line almost always means your underlying performance genuinely has not changed. The test is measuring the same behaviour each time and returning the same answer. More mocks reproduce the result; they do not move it. What moves it is identifying which specific item types are leaking marks and changing what you do inside those items.

Read your Skills Profile before booking anything else

Your myPTE dashboard includes a Skills Profile (it replaced the older Enabling Skills breakdown, and only you can see it — it is not sent to institutions). It groups your performance into areas such as extended speaking, short writing and multiple-skills comprehension.

That breakdown localises the loss far better than another full mock does. A 65 in Speaking tells you nothing actionable. 'Extended speaking well below everything else' tells you to look at your long-form speaking answers first, such as Describe Image and Retell Lecture, keeping in mind that fluency and pronunciation are scored inside those tasks too.

The three things that pin a score in place

Zeros. An essay under 120 or over 380 words, a Summarize Written Text written as two sentences instead of one, a Describe Image answer that recites a template without describing the image — each of these can score zero on a trait no matter how good your English is. Zeros are the cheapest points on the test to recover.

Hesitation. Oral Fluency responds to pace and continuity, not to vocabulary. Restarting a sentence, long pauses while you think, and 'umm' between clauses will hold Speaking flat across any number of attempts.

Spelling. Write from Dictation gives one point per correctly spelled word and nothing for a misspelled one, and it feeds two sections. Consistent spelling errors quietly cap both Listening and Writing.

Change the behaviour, not the volume

The most common plateau pattern is someone sitting mock after mock, reading the same overall number, and concluding they need more practice. They need different practice: twenty Read Aloud recordings where the only goal is zero restarts, or a week of Write from Dictation where you write out every word you got wrong.

Getting fast feedback on individual items matters more here than test simulation. If you want that without paying per attempt, mypteai.com gives you 20 free AI markings a day across the individual task types, which is enough to work one weak item type properly.

When another mock is worth it

Sit a full mock when you have actually changed something and want to check it holds under time pressure and fatigue — not as a diagnostic. Diagnosis comes from item-level practice and your Skills Profile; the mock is the verification step.
