PTE Speaking Stuck at 65 No Matter How Much You Practice
If your Speaking score will not move off 65, the problem is almost never vocabulary. At that level the two things holding you down are usually a Content score of zero on Describe Image or Retell Lecture, and an Oral Fluency score dragged down by pauses, restarts and self-correction. Both are mechanical problems, and neither one improves by doing more practice questions the same way you have been doing them.
Content is scored first, and it can be zero
Describe Image and Retell Lecture are scored on Content, Oral Fluency and Pronunciation. Content is the one that can wipe out the whole item. A response that does not actually address the image or the lecture, or that the scoring system treats as pre-prepared or memorised, earns nothing for that item no matter how smooth it sounds.
That is the trap for people sitting at 65. You have drilled a template, you deliver it confidently, and it can score like silence. The tell is a plateau that does not respond to effort: if your delivery genuinely sounds better than 65 to you and to anyone who listens to your recordings, look at what is in the response rather than how it is delivered. Name the actual numbers on the graph, the actual trend, the actual point the lecturer made.
Templates got riskier in 2025
Since the August 2025 scoring update, Pearson uses human markers to part-score Content on these tasks alongside the AI. A rehearsed opener that a machine might have tolerated is far more obvious to a person who is reading dozens of responses that all begin the same way.
Keep a minimal frame if it helps you start speaking — one short sentence — and spend the rest of the time on what is actually in front of you.
Oral Fluency is where the fastest real gain is
Pronunciation and Oral Fluency are still AI-scored. Oral Fluency rewards even rhythm and continuous speech, and penalises long pauses, false starts and going back to fix a word. Pearson lists hesitations, repetitions and false starts as things that lower Oral Fluency, so a self-correction costs you twice: the pause, then the repeat.
Do not reach for harder vocabulary at this stage. A word you are not confident pronouncing creates exactly the hesitation that costs you fluency. Accent is not penalised; stopping is.
What to change this week
Record a 40-second answer and count rather than judge: how many pauses over a second, how many restarts, how many repeated phrases. Then re-record aiming to halve that number while saying something concrete about the prompt.
If you want a second opinion on whether a change to your delivery actually registers, PTE AI gives 20 free AI markings a day, which is enough to see whether the fluency number moves when your recording sounds smoother to you.
