PTE Answer Short Question: short and immediate

This is the quickest task in the exam and one of the easiest to score well on, because the answers are general knowledge rather than exam technique. The marks people lose here are almost always about length and hesitation, not knowledge.

One to three words, nothing more

The task asks a simple question with a short factual answer. A full sentence earns nothing extra and eats the recording time.

If asked what you call the person who treats teeth, the answer is "a dentist" — not "the person who treats teeth is called a dentist".

Answer immediately

The recording window is short and fluency still counts. A long pause while you decide costs more than a slightly imperfect answer.

Practise responding within a beat of the question ending. Speed here is a trained reflex, not intelligence.

If you don't know, still say something

Silence scores zero with certainty. A plausible guess sometimes hits, and it never scores worse than nothing.

Say your guess in a normal, confident voice — the same delivery you would use for an answer you were sure of.

What the questions cover

Everyday academic and general knowledge: basic science, common professions, simple geography, standard vocabulary, elementary maths.

None of it is specialist. If a question feels obscure, you have probably misheard it rather than met something genuinely hard.

How to practise

Have someone fire questions at you rapidly, or use recorded ones, and answer aloud without pausing.

The skill being trained is fast, confident retrieval under a timer — not learning facts. Five minutes a day is plenty.
