PTE Read Aloud: how to score well

Read Aloud is one of the highest-value tasks in PTE because it feeds both your Speaking and Reading scores. It is also one of the most improvable, because most lost marks come from delivery habits rather than English ability.

Use the preparation time deliberately

You get a short preparation window before the microphone opens. Most candidates spend it silently panicking or reading the text once with no plan.

Instead, scan for meaning groups and decide where you will pause — usually at commas and between clauses. Note any word you are unsure of and decide how you will say it. Going in with a plan is the single biggest difference between a 60 and a 79 on this task.

One steady pace, all the way to the end

The engine measures oral fluency, which rewards an even rhythm. Rushing the start and slowing at the end reads as unstable delivery.

Pick a pace slightly slower than your natural speech and hold it. Crucially, keep your volume up through the final word — trailing off at the end of the sentence is extremely common and costs both fluency and pronunciation.

Never stop to correct yourself

If you stumble on a word, keep going. A single mispronunciation costs a fraction of what a pause and restart costs.

Practise this deliberately: record yourself reading, make a mistake on purpose, and continue without reacting. It feels wrong at first and it is worth far more marks than perfect accuracy.

Pronunciation is clarity, not accent

You are not marked on having a particular accent. You are marked on whether your sounds are recognisable and your word stress lands in the right place.

Focus on finishing consonants — plurals and past-tense endings especially — and on stressing the right syllable in longer academic words. Those two habits move pronunciation scores more than accent work.

How to practise it daily

Ten minutes a day is enough. Read one passage, record it, and listen back once for three things: did you pause where you planned, did your pace stay even, did you trail off at the end.

Reviewing your own recording is what makes the difference. Reading aloud without listening back builds the same habits you already have.
