PTE Re-order Paragraphs: a method that works

Re-order Paragraphs feels like a puzzle, and people lose time treating it as one. There is a reliable procedure: find the opening sentence, then follow the language links. Meaning alone is not enough — the grammar tells you the order.

Find the topic sentence first

One sentence introduces the subject without referring back to anything. It usually contains a full noun phrase — "The Industrial Revolution" rather than "this period" or "it".

That sentence is almost always first. Identifying it immediately removes most of the difficulty.

Follow the reference chain

Pronouns point backwards. "It", "they", "this process", "such changes" must refer to something already introduced, so the sentence containing them cannot come before the sentence that introduces it.

Repeated noun phrases work the same way: if one sentence says "a new technique" and another says "the technique", the indefinite version comes first.

Use linking words as signposts

"However" and "in contrast" signal a shift from something stated. "Therefore", "as a result" and "consequently" signal a consequence of something stated. "For example" follows a general claim.

These words tell you what must precede a sentence even when the topic is unfamiliar.

• Locate the sentence with no backward reference — that's first
• Match pronouns and "the + noun" to their earlier introduction
• Use linking words to fix relative order
• Read your sequence once end to end as a check

Check, then move on

Read your final order through once. If it flows without a jump, submit and move on.

Do not spend five minutes perfecting one re-order while three fill-in-the-blanks go unanswered. Reading is timed as a block and the blanks carry more marks.
