PTE vs TOEFL: which suits you?

Both are computer-based academic English tests accepted widely for study and migration. They differ most in how speaking is assessed and how quickly results arrive, and those two differences decide the choice for most people.

Scoring scales

PTE reports 10–90 overall and per skill. TOEFL iBT reports 0–120 overall, made up of four sections scored 0–30 each.

Neither maps neatly onto the other, so if an institution lists both, use their stated equivalence rather than converting yourself.

Speaking format

Both record your voice into a microphone rather than using a face-to-face interview, so neither rewards conversational rapport.

PTE integrates speaking with reading and listening more heavily — Read Aloud and Repeat Sentence feed several scores at once. TOEFL speaking tasks are longer and more discursive, often asking you to summarise a passage and a lecture together.

Test length and structure

PTE runs roughly two hours in a single sitting with many short tasks and tight timers. TOEFL is typically longer with fewer, longer tasks.

If you cope better with many quick items than with sustained long-form responses, PTE usually suits you. If you prefer time to develop an answer, TOEFL may.

Results speed

PTE results typically arrive within a couple of days. TOEFL usually takes longer.

For a tight visa or admissions deadline, that difference alone often decides the choice.

Which should you take?

Check first which tests your specific institution or visa accepts — that removes the decision entirely in some cases.

If both are accepted, try one scored practice task of each. How you feel doing a Read Aloud versus a TOEFL integrated speaking task is more informative than any comparison table.
