PTE reading practice that raises scores

Reading is where methodical people lose marks — not because they read badly, but because the section is timed as a block and careful readers run out of time on the tasks that carry the most weight.

Prioritise the two blanks tasks

Reading & Writing Fill in the Blanks and Reading Fill in the Blanks carry the largest share of the Reading score, and the first also feeds Writing.

If your practice time is limited, spend most of it here rather than on the multiple-choice questions.

Build collocations, not word lists

These tasks test which words go together far more than how many definitions you know.

Read something academic daily and record phrases — "conduct research", "a significant increase in" — rather than isolated words. Three or four phrases a day is plenty if you actually review them.

Practise re-ordering as a procedure

Find the sentence with no backward reference; that is first. Then follow pronouns, "the + noun" and linking words to sequence the rest.

Treating it as a repeatable procedure rather than a puzzle cuts the time it takes dramatically.

Train for block timing

Practise the whole reading section against a clock rather than doing questions one at a time with unlimited time.

Give yourself a rough per-task budget and enforce it. Getting comfortable abandoning a stubborn question is a skill in itself.

Mind the negative marking

Where multiple answers can be selected, wrong choices deduct marks. Select only what the text supports.

The classic trap is an option that is factually true but not stated in the passage. The question is always what the text says.
