PTE listening practice: what to do daily
Listening improves through short daily practice with material slightly above your comfort level. The mistake most people make is practising comprehension in general rather than the specific skills the exam measures.
Make Write from Dictation your daily habit
It carries a large share of the Listening score, awards marks per correct word, and trains spelling and grammar at the same time.
Ten sentences a day takes under ten minutes. Track your per-word accuracy rather than whether whole sentences were perfect — it is a better signal and more motivating.
Train note-taking separately
For Summarize Spoken Text and Re-tell Lecture, the bottleneck is note-taking, not listening.
Practise capturing five to seven content words from a three-minute talk, then reconstructing the meaning from just those words. Do it until you stop writing sentences.
Choose the right audio
Academic lectures, science journalism and documentaries match the register of the exam. Casual conversation and entertainment do not.
Use a range of accents deliberately — the test mixes them, and practising with only one leaves you exposed.
Read before the audio starts
For the fill-in-the-blanks and highlight tasks, the text appears before the audio plays. Use those seconds to read it and predict what is coming.
Predicting the grammatical shape of a missing word turns a hard listening task into a much easier confirmation task.
Protect your concentration
Listening comes last in the exam when you are most tired, so practise it when you are slightly tired rather than always when fresh.
Short daily sessions build the concentration stamina that a single weekly marathon does not.
Practise listening tasks free
Practise any task and get scored the way the real engine scores you — with the exact words that cost you marks. Free to start, no card needed.
