PTE Highlight Correct Summary: compare carefully

You listen to a recording, then choose which of several paragraphs best summarises it. The difficulty is that every option usually contains something true — the right answer is the one that is both accurate and complete.

Take notes you can compare against

Capture the main claim and two or three supporting points while listening. You are not trying to reconstruct the recording, only to have something concrete to check options against.

Without notes you end up choosing the option that feels most familiar, which is exactly what the distractors are designed to exploit.

Judge on accuracy and completeness

A summary that is entirely true but covers only one point is wrong, because it is incomplete. A summary that covers everything but adds a claim the speaker never made is also wrong.

Check each option against both tests before choosing.

Watch for the partially-true distractor

The most common wrong answer takes a genuine detail from the recording and overstates it, or attaches it to the wrong cause.

Small qualifying words matter here: "most", "always", "only" and "never" are frequently where a plausible option goes wrong.

Read the options quickly first if you can

If the options are visible before or during the audio, skim them so you know what distinctions you are listening for.

That turns an open listening task into a targeted comparison, which is far more reliable.

Manage the time

Do not reread all options repeatedly. Eliminate the clearly wrong ones, then decide between the final two on completeness.

Listening is the last section and time pressure is real — a confident choice beats an agonised one.
