PTE Repeat Sentence: how to remember more

Repeat Sentence rewards short-term memory and delivery far more than comprehension. Many candidates who understand every word still score badly, because they try to memorise word by word instead of holding the sentence as a shape.

Listen for chunks, not words

A ten to fifteen word sentence is too long to hold word by word, but easy to hold as three or four meaning groups.

Train yourself to hear "the university library / will be closed / for renovations / until September" rather than fourteen separate words. Chunking roughly doubles what most people can accurately repeat.

Say something, always

The task awards credit for correct words in the right order, so a partial answer scores. Silence scores nothing.

If you catch only the first half, say the first half confidently and at a normal pace. Candidates routinely lose easy marks by freezing when they realise they missed the end.

Delivery still counts

This is a speaking task, so oral fluency and pronunciation are being measured alongside content.

Repeat at a natural, even pace as if you meant to say it. Whispering, trailing off, or repeating in a hesitant staccato costs marks even when every word is right.

How to build the skill

Practise with sentences slightly longer than you are comfortable with, and do it daily — memory span improves with consistent short practice far more than occasional long sessions.

Do not read the transcript first. The whole skill is holding language you have heard only once.

Why it is worth the effort

Repeat Sentence contributes to both Speaking and Listening scores, which makes it one of the better returns on practice time in the exam.

It also trains the same chunking skill that Write from Dictation and Summarize Spoken Text depend on, so improvement here lifts several tasks at once.
